Golf Course
Ecosystem |
By Lynne L. Finch
Next time you hit your golf ball into the woods take
a moment to appreciate the ecosystem of a golf
course. On the USGA website is an interesting
article, “Golf Courses Benefit People and Wildlife.”
Because only about 30 percent of a golf course is
open fairways and greens, why am I surprised that my
golf ball lands in the rough or among the trees.
The USGA article states that a landscape of turf,
trees, and shrubs about 2,000 square feet in size
generates enough oxygen for one person for one year.
That is just one benefit. Golf courses benefit the
environment in many ways.
The golf course ecosystem:
- Provides wildlife
habitat
- Protects topsoil
from water and wind erosion
- Improves community
aesthetics
- Absorbs and filters
rain
- Improves health and
reduces stress for more than 24.5 million golfers
- Improves air quality
- Captures and
cleanses runoff in urban areas
If you’d like to do
something about those golf balls that disappear in
the woods you might consider recycled or recyclable
golf balls. Wilson Eco-Cores comply with all U.S.
Golf Association regulations made from recycled car
tires. Dixon Golf has fully recyclable balls and a
program that pays you to return them. You might also
consider using biodegradable tees. Eco Golf offers
biodegradable corn-based tees.
Enjoy the green benefits all around you on the golf
course and do what you can to keep it healthy. |

League Jamboree |
The 2009 League season
ended the last week of August, with the League
Jamboree held on Sat., Sept. 12th. The afternoon
included a fun golf scramble and dinner with prizes.
Congratulations to the following players who placed
in their leagues:
HIGHLAND RIDGE: 1st - Cyndee Sweetland; 2nd – Sara
Gillis; 3rd – Julie Salemi
LEVEL 3: 1st – Pat Boverhuis; 2nd – Jennifer Koeppl;
3rd – Mary Charles; 4th – Carrie Garczynski
LEVEL 4: 1st – Penny Guptill; 2nd – Kathy Blumreich;
3rd – Jessica Crane
LEVEL 5: 1st – Laura Kennin; 2nd – Lori Sargent; 3rd
– Pam Fritz; 4th – Chari Olson
We think everyone had an enjoyable time playing in
leagues this summer, and hope you all return to play
next summer. Those of you who didn’t participate in
a league this year, please think about joining one
next season. It’s a lot of fun, gets you out to play
golf at least once a week, and you get to know some
other EWGA ladies along the way!
