Did you ever feel that something wasn’t quite right with your swing and your shots were inconsistent, but you couldn’t put your finger on what was causing it? This session addresses pre-swing fundamentals that give the student the best possible chance of making a consistent swing. This includes the grip, review of setup and posture, aligning the clubface and body to the target, and understanding shot routines. Video analysis helps the student visualize those parts of her swing that need refining, and confirms the instructor’s diagnosis and suggested corrections.

Question: Why do so many golfers seem to suffer from back pain?

Answer:
You are not alone. Lower back pain is the most common golf injury for both professional and recreational golfers.

When you take a close look at the golf swing, it’s easy to see how much stress is placed on the lower back and why injuries are so frequent. Here are some of the more frequent causes of lower back pain in golfers:
  • Poor body mechanics;
  • Poor swing mechanics including:
    • S-Posture (too much arch in your back);
    • Reverse spine angle (leaning toward the target at the top of the backswing) -- the number one cause of back pain in golfers;
    • Early extension (standing up out of posture during downswing);
    • Restricted right leg follow-through (not completing weight transition);
    • Reverse “C” Finish (too much arch at completion of swing);
  • Excessive practice (overuse);
  • Lack of regular customized exercise program;
  • Poor nutrition; and
  • Improper club fitting (especially with children).
There is research showing that trunk endurance and hamstring length are actually low predictors of low back pain! Things that have been shown to have a higher correlation to low back pain are:
  • Body Mass Index (BMI): tall, slender golfers were more likely to experience back pain.
  • Increased endurance of right side during a timed side plank.
  • Lead hip internal rotation: not having proper range to follow through.
  • Hip flexor length (flexibility): negative perception with back pain.
Almost all back injuries can be managed effectively with a proper golf instruction. Next month I will discuss some exercises that will help your back pain throughout the season. You can also check out the Titleist Performance Institute™ website at www.mytpi.com for other great information.

Sunshine Fund
Have you had a recent promotion, job change, or major life event? Could you use support during a hard time? The members of EWGA would like to celebrate your successes and support you when you are down. If you yourself or another member you know has experienced a major event, please let Vice President Lisa Werner know by emailing her at
vp@ewga-foxcitiesgreenbay.org with the subject line 'Sunshine Fund'. Include pictures if you'd like! We would like to celebrate YOU and will share your news with other members through the Chapter Chatter.

It’s YOUR turn to get involved…just say “YES”!
That’s the word Leadership Chair, Amy Henselin and her committee members will be wanting to hear from you as they lead our chapter through the nominations and elections process to fill the upcoming expiring terms for some of our Chapter Officers (President, Vice President and Treasurer) and seek volunteers who are interested in being appointed to one of our Chapter Committees. All terms will start November 1st.

Officer Nominations/Elections
Be on the look out for separate email communications directly from Amy regarding this process. Here is the timetable we will be following (entire process conducted via email only):
  • June 2nd – Distribution of Officer Nominations Form to all active EWGA members
  • June 13th – Deadline for members to return Nominations Form
  • July 11th – Ballot/Slate of Officer Candidates sent to all active EWGA members
  • July 25th - Deadline for members to return Ballots
  • August 15th – Results of election announced to members
  • October 16th – Annual Membership Meeting – Volunteer
  • Recognition/Officer Installation
  • TBD – Transitional Board Meeting
  • November 1st – Officers terms begin

Committee Volunteers
Due to rotating term limits, our Chapter has “open” Chair positions for the following committees: Membership, Golf Education and Player Development, Leadership, Social Events and Leagues These positions are all two year terms. Volunteers are needed to fill these positions as well as supporting roles. Most committees need 3-5 volunteers so there is plenty for everyone to be involved…all YOU need to do is say, “YES”!

Here is the following timetable we will be following for committee appointments:

  • July 11th – Distribution of Committee Interest Form to members via email
  • September 1st – Board approval of Committee Chairs
  • October 16th - Annual Membership Meeting – Volunteer
  • Recognition/Officer Installation
  • TBD – Transitional Board Meeting
  • November 1st – Officer terms start

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved at whatever level you choose…all YOU need to do is say “YES”!
