Question:
What exercises can I do to improve my strength before the upcoming golf season?
Answer:
The winter months are a great time to improve core stability strength, which helps maintain swing pattern, swing speed, and prevent injuries. There are some specific exercises that will help with improving strength for golfers and that are not overly time-consuming. Be sure to work with a golf fitness professional to build a customized program for you.
Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine is a sponsor of the EWGA and will be available for questions at the Spring Kickoff on April 12th!
1. Single Leg Dead Lifts (gluteal muscles – standing leg)
Holding onto a dumbbell in your right hand, lift your right leg off the ground. Now, slowly hinge forward, keeping your spine inline with your straight right leg. “Tip” as far as comfortable. Return to the standing position. Repeat 3 sets 12-15 each side.
2. Reach, Roll, & Lift (shoulder blade muscles)
Kneel on the ground and sit back onto your heels. Rest both arms forward on an exercise ball or chair. Reach right arm forward past the left hand, Roll your palm to the sky, and then try to lift a straight arm up off the chair/ball. Make sure you only lift your arm and keep your trunk stable. Repeat 2x10 on each side.
3. Dead Bug + Leg Slide (lower abdominals)
Lying flat on your back with your knees bent, get into a neutral spine position. Brace your abdominal muscles to keep your core stable throughout this exercise. Slowly slide your left leg out along the ground and back in, making sure your pelvis and back stays in neutral. Repeat 3x10 each side.
